President’s Message
January 2012
Hello to all you rock groupies, this is my inaugural
state of the union address.
I hope everyone had wonderful holiday with family
and friends along with good food and cheer, I know
my clan did.
Now lets get down to business;
I never foresaw this position that I am now in but I
will make the best of it with help from past appointees
and other board members. So bare with me for all my
future fumbling and stumbling at the meetings, hopefully
I will catch on by the end of the year if I don't run
for the hills first.
My wife and I joined the West Seattle Rock Club to
expand our limited knowledge of the natural world of
rocks. We love the excitement of the hunt, the outdoors,
and the people interactions that field trips provide.
Ultimately, I would like field trips to be a bigger
part of the adventure with the club. I will need lots of
suggestions from Brian Waters and others as to map
out fun locations for short day trips.
Any suggestions for topics for future meetings would
be greatly appreciated. I will be adding a suggestion
box, bring your ideas.
Let me tell you a little about my wife Diane and myself.
I have been in the metal industry for over 30+
years and Diane has been in medical insurance just as
long. I can safely say I know metal and metal fabrication
and Diane knows about medical insurance, but
rocks - not so much. Diane and I have a goal to not
only understand the origins of each rock, but how they
are formed and where to find them geologically. I
hope others are as curious as us. Therefore, I will be
working with our new vice president, Michael O'Clair
and other club members in order to help us and others
acquire more technical information in our educational
meeting program. We will try to add adventure and
mystery into the education portion to make learning
fun for all.
One person will be awarded a prize for the correct
answers to these questions:
1: What type of material are diamonds normally found
and formed? Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic.
2: What specific type of rock from the above answer
are diamond typically embedded in?
3: What hardness on the Mohs scale are diamond?
4: What is the chemical composition of diamond?
5: What other materials share it's chemical composition?
Place your answers with your name in the new suggestion
box at the next meeting and we will draw a winner
from there. This will be only for those who have
read this message. Good luck!
